Job Posting: Youth Services Assistant (Part-Time)
Position Title: Youth Services Assistant
Hours: 15–20 hours per week
Schedule: Includes mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends
Reports To: Library Director
Starting Rate: $12/hour

Position Summary
The Youth Services Assistant supports the library’s mission by providing engaging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate services for children and families. This position plays an active role in storytimes, children’s programming, youth collection development, and community outreach, while also assisting with general library operations. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about children’s literature, enjoys working with families, and values the role of libraries as welcoming community spaces.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Youth Services & Programming

Plan and facilitate storytimes for children, incorporating books, songs, movement, and hands-on activities

Assist with the planning, promotion, and delivery of children’s programs and events

Support outreach efforts to local schools, municipalities, and community organizations

Promote and share knowledge of local services and resources for parents, caregivers, and children
Collection Support

Demonstrate knowledge of children’s literature, trends, and age-appropriate materials

Assist the Library Director in building, maintaining, and evaluating the youth collection
Public Service & Operations

Perform circulation desk duties, including checking materials in/out and assisting patrons

Shelve and maintain materials in accordance with library standards

Provide welcoming, courteous, and inclusive service to all patrons

Other library duties as assigned
Professional Standards

Uphold the standards, ethics, and values of the American Library Association (ALA)

Support the library’s mission, policies, and commitment to intellectual freedom, equity, and access

Qualifications
-
Experience working with children in an educational, library, childcare, or community setting preferred

Familiarity with children’s literature and early literacy concepts

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Comfort with public speaking and leading group activities

Ability to lift, shelve, and move up to 25 pounds of library materials
-
Ability to obtain and provide current Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, Pennsylvania Criminal History Clearance, and FBI Fingerprint Clearance as required by state law.

Preferred (but not required)

Coursework or background in education, library science, child development, or a related field

Experience with outreach or community programming
